Sixty-five years ago today Mahatma Gandhi, one of the 20th century's great spiritual leaders, was assassinated in India, at the age of 78. Gandhi lived in South Africa for 21 years and it was here that his passive resistance philosophy was born.

The whimsical, critically acclaimed Searching for Sugar Man – about the quest to find mysterious American folk singer Sixto Rodriguez by two South African fans – and a short film about a Somali boy, both filmed in Cape Town, have landed nominations for a 2013 Academy Award.
