South Africa’s gold panning team has claimed first position and 16 medals at the 2012 World Gold Panning Championships, which took place in the historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest in Mpumalanga where gold was first discovered in 1873.

South Africa is one of 35 countries participating in a global heritage photography competition, and during September, Heritage Month, citizens are encouraged to visit heritage sites, photograph them and enter them into the project.
